17 — Rim diameter
- Meaning
- Rim diameter in inches. Fit a tyre with the same number: "R17" in its size.
- Unit
- inches
Using 17×7J 5-114.3 offset 45 as an example: how to read wheel dimensions and what to check on the vehicle. Matching bolt holes and PCD are only one part of the fitment check.
Note down your current wheel size and offset and your vehicle's chassis code — it makes checking quicker.
Change rim width, offset or tyre size and see the difference in millimetres and on the diagram.

Check the number of bolt holes, the PCD and the rim width. J and JJ are not units.
Wheel dimensions are written, for example, as "17×7J 5-114.3 offset 45". The order and format vary by maker and wheel model.

If either differs, the bolt holes will not line up.
Circle sizes are for comparison, not to scale.

17 — rim diameter in inches. Fit a tyre with the same number: "R17" in its size.
7J — 7 is the rim width in inches: 7 × 25.4 = 177.8 mm. J is a code for the flange profile (the rim edge the tyre sits against), not a unit of width. J and JJ are the most common.
5 — number of bolt holes. Depending on the vehicle there are usually 4 to 6; a wheel with a different number of holes cannot be fitted.
114.3 — PCD: the diameter, in millimetres, of the circle through the centres of the hub bolts. A wheel with a different PCD cannot be fitted.
Offset 45 — explained in the next section.
Matching bolt holes and PCD alone do not confirm that the wheel fits. Check that the size, bolt holes, PCD, offset, mounting-face shape and nut seat all suit your vehicle.
Example: 17×7J 5-114.3 offset 45
| Mark | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| 17 | Rim diameter | inches |
| 7 | Rim width | inches (177.8 mm) |
| J, JJ | Flange (rim edge) profile | code, not a unit |
| 5 | Number of bolt holes | holes |
| 114.3 | PCD: diameter of the bolt-centre circle | mm |
| 45 | Offset (ET) | mm |
| DIA | Centre bore diameter | mm |

Check the offset including its sign. If the centre bore is unconfirmed, ask us before buying.
Contact usOffset (ET) is the distance in millimetres from the centreline of the rim width to the mounting face — the face that sits against the vehicle hub.
With the mounting face in the same place, a smaller offset moves the wheel outwards and a larger one moves it inwards.
The offset number alone cannot tell you how much difference is acceptable: compare it with the vehicle's original wheels and check the clearance to the body and components.
The centre bore (DIA) is the diameter of the hole in the middle of the wheel. Compare it with the diameter of the vehicle's hub.
The illustration shows the wheel moving 10 mm outward when ET45 changes to ET35 at the same width, and where the PCD and centre bore (DIA) are.
Top: cross-section with the same 7J width and mounting face, ET45 → ET35. Bottom: front view showing where the PCD and centre bore (DIA) are.
If the mounting face is outboard of the centreline, the offset is positive; if inboard, negative. The plus sign may be omitted, so "ET45", "+45" and "offset 45" mean the same.
With the mounting face in the same place, a smaller offset moves the wheel outwards and a larger one moves it inwards. On the same 7J wheel, going from ET45 to ET35 moves the wheel 10 mm outwards. A large change can bring the tyre into contact with the wing or the brake caliper, and it affects handling stability. The offset number alone cannot tell you how much difference is acceptable: compare it with the vehicle's original wheels and check the clearance to the body and components.
The centre bore (DIA) is the diameter of the hole in the middle of the wheel. Compare it with the diameter of the vehicle's hub. Aftermarket wheels often have a larger centre bore, and the gap to the hub may be filled with a hub ring (hub collar). A hub ring cannot be fitted to every wheel design, and it must be removed when you go back to the original wheels or the spare.
Example: 7J, ET45 → ET35
| Marking | Meaning | Compare with |
|---|---|---|
| ET45 (+45) | Mounting face 45 mm outboard of the rim centreline | Original wheel offset |
| ET0 | Mounting face on the rim centreline | Original wheel offset |
| ET−10 | Mounting face 10 mm inboard of the rim centreline | Original wheel offset |
| DIA | Centre bore diameter, mm | Vehicle hub diameter |

Also check the vehicle side: nuts, seat type and brake clearance.
Even when the wheel dimensions match, the wheel cannot be fitted if the vehicle-side conditions do not.

Nuts and bolts: check the vehicle's thread diameter and pitch, and use fasteners that match the wheel's nut seat. Seats can be tapered, ball (spherical) or flat; fasteners of a different shape can come loose while driving.
Brakes and mounting face: on some vehicles, weights, assembly bolts or locating pins protrude from the brake drum or mounting face; check that they do not touch the wheel.
Body and suspension: after fitting, check for contact with the body and suspension parts — for the front wheels, also with the steering turned fully to each side. Wheels or tyres protruding beyond the body are prohibited by law.
Axles: if front and rear sizes differ, check both. Fit wheels of the same size and model on the same axle.
Standard: light-alloy wheels for passenger cars in Japan have a technical standard called JWL, and compliant wheels carry the JWL mark.
Tightening: tighten nuts and bolts to the recommended torque with a torque wrench, or to the value in the vehicle's manual if one is given. After fitting or rotating wheels, retighten them after about 100 km.
A vehicle name alone cannot confirm fitment: brakes and suspension of the same model can differ by year, chassis code and trim.
| Item | What to check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nuts and bolts | Thread diameter and pitch, seat shape (taper, ball, flat) | A different shape can come loose |
| Brakes and mounting face | Contact with weights, assembly bolts or pins | Interference with the wheel |
| Body and suspension | Contact with the steering at full lock | Rubbing while driving |
| Protrusion | Wheel and tyre stay within the body | Prohibited by law |
| Axles | Specification for each axle; the same wheels on one axle | Some vehicles differ front and rear |
| Tightening | Recommended torque, retighten after about 100 km | Prevents loosening |

For used wheels, also check for signs of repair. A wheel maker's owner's manual warns that welding or straightening reduces a wheel's strength and can lead to air leaks, breakage and an accident, and says such repairs should not be made.

Minor marks may be touched up; touch-ups and repairs do not make an item new. Wheel straightening, welding or refinishing that we identify is stated in the item description. The absence of such a note does not guarantee that there has been no repair or defect.
Catalogue filters show candidates that match your conditions; they do not certify that a wheel fits your vehicle. If the listing does not show the offset or centre bore, do not rely on a typical value — ask us before buying.
When you contact us, please give the item number, vehicle make and model, year, chassis code and trim. For wheels, the current size, offset and brake details also matter. A vehicle name alone cannot confirm fitment.
